Green Valley, Arizona, is much more than a booming Arizona retirement community. With nine golf courses, shopping plazas, dozens of clubs and volunteer organizations, medical facilities, places of worship and recreation centers, Green Valley is a destination for retirees seeking an active lifestyle. And while most of Green Valley is age-restricted, there are also areas where you'll find non-age-restricted communities where families with children live.

Located at an elevation of 2900 feet, Green Valley is located in the historic Santa Cruz River Valley, at the base of the majestic Santa Rita Mountains. This high elevation gives Green Valley temperatures which are several degrees cooler than Tucson and Phoenix. This area offers a multitude of historical sights, scenic wonders and unique shopping opportunities - all within a 30-minute drive.

The community, with an area population of more than 27,000, offers the casual, clean, uncongested atmosphere of a small town, yet provides all the major services and diversions that a comfortable retirement lifestyle commands. Airport and specialized facilities are available in Tucson, only 25 minutes north on Interstate 19.

Madera Canyon, high in the rugged Santa Rita Mountains, is home to 238 species of birds and is renowned for its hummingbird population. Hiking and nature trails branch from this canyon that lead to the 9,453-foot summit of Mt. Wrightston and a spectacular view of the lush Santa Cruz River Valley

It's a golfer's paradise in Green Valley which maintains numerous golf courses, ranging from traditional broad layouts to challenging, tournament-quality designs. Several of the courses offer club memberships. You'll find easy access to over two dozen other top courses in Tucson, just a half-hour drive to the north.

There is a tremendous diversity of shopping opportunities in Southern Arizona. Heading south from Green Valley, there are over 400 businesses that offer gifts, clothing, merchandise and services geared toward the preferences of seniors.

Original Southwestern art and craft items are available from local artists as well as from neighboring art communities like Tubac . There are many world-renowned artists who reside in the area with exhibits in area galleries.

For an international flair, the Mexican border town of Nogales, 40 miles south, offers a wide variety of unusual, handcrafted gift items.

This area has a rich, colorful history, having been governed under four different flags: Spain, Mexico, The Confederacy and the United States. Green Valley rests on 5,000 acres of some of the most famous real estate in the world. It was part of Spanish King Ferdinand VII's land grant dating back over 400 years, and is known as the San Ignacio de las Canoa Grant.

During World War I, the land under what is now Green Valley, was used to grow guayule plants, which provided a latex extract to replace Malaysian rubber that had been cut off during the war. After the war, the guayule plants were replaced with Pima cotton. In recent times, cotton has given way to the now world-famous Green Valley Pecan Groves, the largest groves in the United States.
